School daze

Ok I have been asked why I still go to school, me an oldster at 39 taking University classes constantly. I go to school cause I have this thing about always wanting to learn new stuff. If I had tried hard enough I could have had about 3 or 4 degrees by now. As it is I currently have over 160 undergraduate credits mainly concentrated in 4 areas: Chemistry - My original major and what I wanted to do with my life until a bad semester with a man hater dyke sue the University for discrimination woman chemistry professor. She gave every male student in her Quantitative Analysis Chemistry Lab a 'D' or an "F'. It got so bad that I turned in a lab write up that I had done and got a 'D' on it and my female lab partner turned in the same lab write up with just a few changes and got an 'A'. Computers - I tuned into computer geekdom in the late 80s and have managed to learn 7 or 8 computing languages, everything from C++ and Visual Basic to Fortran, UNIX, Java, and RPG. In addition, I have worked for various help desks here in Vegas for the last 10 years or so and have mostly enjoyed my jobs. I have also picked up a couple of certifications along the way. History - Probably one of the subjects that I enjoy the most. As soon as I finish my 20 page paper class and take one Freshman level class I will have enough credits for a degree in history, but will probably wait until I finish my other subject area... Secondary Education - Teri has just about convinced me to become a teacher as I would love to have summers off to enjoy my hobbies: computers, robots, and gardening. It would also be cool to teach in the same school as my wife, plus Teri keeps on telling me that I have a gift for teaching people stuff.

Even if I do manage to get my two degrees in a year or two, I have already decided that I am going to get a masters in computers or chemistry or both and maybe even continue on and get that elusive PhD in some other subject. I have also thought about going back and finishing up my chemistry degree even though there is not much I could do with it here in Vegas. I figure by the time I am done, between Teri and I we will have paid enough that they should name a building for me at UNLV.

Ack! 160 undergraduate credits! I finished with 145, only because I changed my major to MIS from Communications later in the game.

Congrats on the decision to be a teacher! Summers off would be nice, eh? With all the programming languages you know, you could really write your ticket anywhere... Programming was not my forte, I did well in Cobol and Java wasn't too bad; VB made scrambled eggs out of my brain.

Nahhh Lora I always get stuck on the experience thing...I have the knowledge but not the experience...and in this town to get an entry level position you either have to know someone or b*** someone...

I'm just happy to see you coming close to nailing a few of these degrees. And Teri is right, you'd make a good teacher. Maybe, home economics. B)

Thanks everyone, I have always said that I would never change anything that has happened to me in my life and I truly mean it.

Aww, Teri, that was too cute!

Lloyd, man! What do I even say? You're smart enough for the both of us. And well, alot of my friends.

I commend you! I know all of that is hard work and not just anyone can do it.

I wish you all the best with what you decide to do. I think a teacher would be great too. Then you'd get to share all the knowledge you've gathered in the years. You can start by telling me what the hell C++ and Visual Basic to Fortran, UNIX, Java, and RPG is! =P

I'm a wanna-be computer nerd. And I really do wanna be. I'm torn between that and legal stuff. Boo.

Jenn -- C++ is a powerful computer programming language that most applications are written in. Visual Basic is Microsoft old standby programming language. Fortran is the computing language used by scientists in the old days. Unix is another powerful language popularized to the common user as LINUX. Java was Sun's answer to Visual Basic, write once run anywhere. RPG is a clumsy mainframe language used mostly in old server environments, but just happens to be what a lot of the Vegas casinos still use for some of their apps.

Whaddee say??? ... Fortran ... UNIX ... RPG?

History? Man, I love history, but I admit that I don't have a very good grasp on some of it. You should talk about that more!

(Actually, you should talk about anything more. I just got jumped on for going over ten days without posting... Uh huh.)
